What is it? How do we get rid of them?

What Are Bed Bugs?

Bed bugs are small, parasitic insects that feed on the blood of humans and animals, usually at night. Their scientific name is Cimex lectularius. They are flat, oval-shaped, reddish-brown in color, and about the size of an apple seed when fully grown.

How Do Bed Bugs Live and Reproduce?

1. Habitat:
Bed bugs typically hide in:

  • Mattress seams
  • Box springs
  • Headboards
  • Cracks in walls or furniture
  • Under carpets or baseboards

They are nocturnal and prefer to come out at night to feed while humans are asleep.

2. Feeding:
They use their sharp mouthparts to pierce the skin and draw blood. Bites usually cause itchy red welts, though some people may not react at all.

3. Reproduction:

  • A female bed bug can lay 1 to 5 eggs per day.
  • In her lifetime, she may lay 200–500 eggs.
  • Eggs hatch in about 6–10 days, and the young (called nymphs) go through five molting stages before reaching adulthood.
  • Bed bugs can mature in about 5 weeks under favorable conditions.

They can survive for several months without feeding, making them hard to eliminate once established.

How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs (Effective Methods):

1. Deep Cleaning & Decluttering:

  • Wash all bedding, clothing, and fabrics in hot water (above 60°C / 140°F) and dry them on the highest heat setting.
  • Vacuum thoroughly – including mattresses, bed frames, cracks in the walls, and carpets.
  • Dispose of the vacuum bag immediately in a sealed plastic bag.

2. Use Heat or Cold Treatments:

  • Heat treatment (above 45°C / 113°F) kills bed bugs and their eggs.
  • Some items can be sealed in plastic bags and placed in a freezer below -18°C / 0°F for at least 4 days.

3. Steam Cleaning:

  • Steam kills bed bugs on contact. Use a steam cleaner on mattresses, couches, and corners where they may hide.

4. Diatomaceous Earth (Natural Option):

  • This is a fine powder made from fossilized algae. Sprinkle it in cracks and crevices.
  • It kills bed bugs by drying out their exoskeletons.

5. Insecticides & Professional Help:

  • Use EPA-approved bed bug sprays or powders (e.g., pyrethroids).
  • However, many bed bugs have developed resistance to chemicals, so it may be necessary to hire a licensed pest control professional.

6. Encase Mattresses:

  • Use bed bug-proof encasements to trap any bugs inside and prevent new ones from entering.

Prevention Tips:

  • Regularly inspect your mattress and furniture.
  • Avoid bringing second-hand furniture into your home unless thoroughly inspected.
  • After traveling, check your luggage and wash clothes immediately.
