40 Dead, 100 Injured — What Began as Celebration Ended in Final Goodbyes

The music stopped with a scream. In seconds, celebration became carnage. Flames ripped through Le Constellation as hundreds of New Year’s revelers fought for air, light, survival. People fell, were trampled, disappeared in the smoke. Sirens wailed across the snow-covered resort as a night of joy turned into a valley of gri… They came to…

Cryonic preservation: 50 years later

Posted on December 31, 2025December 31, 2025 By Adolph No Comments on Cryonic preservation: 50 years later
Cryonic preservation: 50 years later

Dr. James Hiram Bedford was a man of many talents – a professor at the University of California and a veteran of World War I who lived a fulfilled life and traveled the world. But this man will be best remembered as the first person whose body underwent cryonic preservation. It is the practice of preserving a human body (or brain) at extremely low temperatures after death.

Bedford, who was a rather wealthy man, was diagnosed with kidney cancer that metastasized to his lungs in 1967, a time when the medicine was not as advanced as it is today.

At the time of his diagnosis, Bedford was familiar with the concept of cryonic preservation.

He read about in the book The Prospect of Immortality by Dr. Robert Ettinger.

Dr. Ettiger is the founder of the Cryonics Institute and is considered the father of body freezing experiments. His institute provides body freezing services after death, with the aim of potentially reviving it in the future when medical technology has advanced enough to cure the condition that caused the individual’s death.

Having read about this process, Bedfrod asked his body to be frozen after his passing.

On the afternoon of January 12, 1967, he was injected with dimethyl sulfoxide – to protect his internal organs – after all his blood was drained from his body.

Next, they placed Bedford in a tank of liquid nitrogen at minus 196 degrees Celsius.

Twenty-four years later, Alcor, an organization performing cryonic preservation, opened Bedford’s body and checked his cryogenic condition.

It was determined that the body was preserved nicely. His nose and mouth smelled like blood and his face looked younger than his 73 years. Areas of skin on his chest and neck were discolored and his corneas were the chalky white of ice.

Then, technicians wrapped Bedford in a new sleeping bag and immersed his body in liquid nitrogen to wait.

Today, over 50 years after the promised time to wake Bredford, he’s still just a “mummy.”

According to Robert Nelson, one of three scientist who performed the cryonic preservation, Bredford’s last words were: “I want you to understand that I did not do this with the thought that I would be revived. I did this in the hope that one day my descendants will benefit from this wonderful scientific solution.”

These are the consequences of wearing used…

Posted on December 31, 2025 By Adolph No Comments on These are the consequences of wearing used…

Have you ever put on a pair of second-hand shoes and then noticed a small yellow bump forming on your toe? It can feel uncomfortable and even worrying at first, but in most cases it’s harmless. That yellow bump is usually a corn or callus—a patch of thickened skin that develops when your body tries to protect itself from repeated rubbing or pressure.

Why Does This Happen?
Pre-owned shoes are a common cause because they rarely fit a new wearer perfectly. Over time, shoes mold to the original owner’s foot shape, creating pressure spots, seams, or worn areas that don’t align with your toes. This mismatch can lead to ongoing irritation, such as:

Friction: Your toe repeatedly rubs against tight, narrow, or stiff areas inside the shoe.

Pressure: Shoes that squeeze the toes—especially the big toe or little toe—apply constant force.

As a defense, the skin thickens, forming a hard, raised area that often looks yellow due to a buildup of dead skin cells (keratin). Hard corns usually develop on the tops or sides of toes and may have a central core that hurts when pressed, often compared to stepping on a small stone.

Other Possible Causes (Less Common)
Blisters: Intense friction can initially cause fluid-filled blisters, which may appear yellowish if infection develops.

Fungal infections: Shoes worn by others can carry fungi that lead to athlete’s foot or nail infections. These typically cause itching, redness, peeling skin, or yellowing nails rather than a firm bump.

Why Second-Hand Shoes Are More Likely to Cause Problems
While new shoes can cause issues during the break-in period, used shoes come with extra concerns:

They’re already shaped to someone else’s feet, creating uneven pressure points.

Poor sanitation can transfer sweat, bacteria, or fungi, increasing irritation or infection risk.

(Images above typically show yellow corns or calluses caused by shoe friction.)

How to Treat It
Most yellow bumps improve with basic home care:

Change footwear: Stop wearing the problematic shoes. Choose well-fitting pairs with roomy toe boxes and good cushioning.

Soak and smooth: Soak your feet in warm, soapy water for 10–20 minutes, then gently use a pumice stone or emery board. Don’t cut the skin yourself.

Reduce friction: Apply corn pads, moleskin, or gel toe protectors.

Moisturize: Use creams containing urea to soften thickened skin.

OTC treatments: Salicylic acid pads can gradually break down corns.

If the area becomes painful, red, swollen, produces pus, or doesn’t improve after a couple of weeks, it’s best to see a podiatrist. They can safely treat the problem and check for underlying causes such as bunions or bone spurs.

Preventing Problems with Used Shoes
Clean and disinfect second-hand shoes thoroughly, ideally with antifungal sprays.

Wear socks to reduce friction and moisture.

Break shoes in slowly.

Choose breathable materials and the correct size.

That yellow bump is your skin’s way of signaling too much friction. Fixing the shoe fit usually solves the problem quickly—and when foot issues persist, professional care can help you get back to comfortable, healthy steps.

He returned with a million dollars… but froze when he opened his front door

The last night bus of the route screeched to a halt in front of a lonely sign that read: Redwood Plains. The hour sat somewhere between twilight and full darkness, and the Nevada sky was already cooling into deep violet. A cold wind brushed across the empty parking lot, sending curls of dust clinging to…

The sirens came too late. A grandmother’s trembling call exposed what the bruises had already screamed in silence. A mother’s shaky excuses, a cruel story about a fall, collapsed under the weight of medical reports and a child’s broken body. Behind closed doors, a nightmare had unfolded, unnoticed, unreported, until the da… By the time…
