Common Reasons for Lumps on the Neck or Back of the Ear

Posted on December 25, 2025December 25, 2025 By Adolph No Comments on Common Reasons for Lumps on the Neck or Back of the Ear

Finding a lump on your neck, upper back, or behind your ear can be unsettling, but many such lumps are quite common and often not serious. These changes under the skin can vary in size and texture, and they may appear for a variety of everyday reasons. In many cases, they are harmless and develop slowly over time. Learning what they might indicate can help reduce unnecessary anxiety and guide you toward appropriate next steps.

One common explanation for a small, round lump beneath the skin is an epidermoid cyst. These noncancerous growths form when skin cells move inward instead of shedding naturally. As the cells collect, they create a small sac filled with keratin, a protein normally found in skin, hair, and nails. Epidermoid cysts are often found on the neck, back, or near the ears and typically feel firm or slightly rubbery. They are usually painless unless they become irritated.
